How many of you have ever had a craving so bad that you just can't stand it anymore.  I mean the kind that just keeps gnawing at you and just won't quit.  Your stomach is growling so loud that the neighbors are calling to check on the bear in your house. 

Well it happened to me this passed week.  I was in the hospital with my wife, she had a kidney stone, on Monday and the most beautiful smell just went by the door.  I mean this was pure ground beef with a smokey flavored smell. The kind that you only get from the hickory sticks in your backyard. Nicki was sleeping so I casually eased over to the doorway and peered out, just in time to see a couple go into the room next door.  It was torture.  That heavenly smell just lingered in the hall. Just as I was about to turn around and head back in, I heard him.  "Mmm, that is a great burger. Did you cook that?"  Torture I say.

Here is the deal.  When you are watching your weight the temptations will come and go.  The trick is to be prepared for them and know that the temporary pleasure of a cheeseburger will not help with your permanent diet goal.  So here are some tips on how to be prepared for the inevitable craving whether its chocolate, apple pie or yes even the Cheeseburger.

First, as the folks at VIP have been stressing to me since day one, eat every 2 hours.  Not a huge meal but a snack to stave off the cravings.  Second, your body will start responding to healthier foods if you train it to do so.  I.E. Eat better foods and stay away from Junk food. Yes that includes cheeseburgers:( The third piece of advice is when a craving hits you it typically means that you have not been doing the first rule. So eat a healthy alternative like protein, almonds are my go to snack.  They are filling and don't hurt your goal.  The last bit is to set your alarm on your phone or watch to 2 hour intervals.  That way you will know to get your snack.  I hope these help and enjoy the holidays!

This is my favorite time of year.  The children are excited to get out of school soon for the Christmas break, the Christmas Tree stays lit all the time in the corner and soon there will be all those fun events that always pop up during the holidays.  Parties and little get togethers all over town.

This really kicks off on Thanksgiving and we just keep on rollin' right through Christmas and New Years. We usually are on the road most if not all of the Thanksgiving afternoon.  This year We went to my folks' house in Missouri, where I grew up, on Wednesday and had Thanksgiving Lunch with them. Then we left and headed home to get the kids to their respective other parents(blended) and friends they had plans with.  On Friday we invited my in-laws over to have some steaks on the grill and we got to see Jaxson our little nephew. Jaxson is 2 and full of uhhmm. Well, let's just say he is all boy! LOL.  On Saturday we turned around and head up to Camden to eat a traditional Thanksgiving meal with, my wife, Nicki's parents again.

I said all of that to say this:  Thursday: the table was filled with Chicken and cornbread dressing, chicken and dumplins', a salad, Hawaiian rolls, corn, green beans, mash potatoes and giblet gravy, a honey baked ham and a butterball turkey that would choke a mule!

Sounds good doesn't it.  Man it was!! According to the kids and the "skinny" side of my family.  I had a couple of really great juicy Turkey pieces and an awesome salad with a tablespoon full of dressing.  I always have to try the dressing. Hey it's Grandma Johnson's recipe.  It was just like she used to make. My mom really has that down cold. 

Friday:  I was cooking so you know that I was able to control the ingredients.  I patted out some hamburgers, seasoned with garlic, salt and pepper and a little Montreal Steak seasoning , The steaks were already in the marinade, Worcester sauce and dale's then again garlic, salt and pepper & Montreal steak seasoning.  I also had some chicken marinating in Tony C's seasoning, soy sauce with a hint of teriyaki sauce. For the sides we had mini stoplight peppers filled with a Philly cheese mixture that tasted like a creamy ranch dip.  baked potatoes, teriyaki noodles, green beans and corn.  The last thing I setup up was a veggy skier filled with jalapenos, zucchini, squash, onion and mushrooms.  I sprinkled that with a lite balsamic vinaigrette.  So during this meal I chose a steak, and the veggie skiers and a couple of the mini peppers. I was able to eat a great meal and not feel hungry afterwards and make the family happy. 

Now comes the tough one.

Saturday:  We arrive in Camden just in time for the BAMA against Auburn.  It was ON!  The smell of some kind of corn was in the are along with a baking cake and of course turkey.  The feast included a secret recipe of Nicki's grandmother called Mexican Corn which had corn, cream cheese, minced jalapenos and other stuff. 'well, if I told you it wouldn't be a secret.'  Soooo good.Along with the turkey was a green bean casserole, candied yams with marshmallows , that purplely red stuff that "shall not be named"(comes in a can and you slice it, if you are brave enough to eat it). This was a good country home cooked meal in front of the TV with the family. The best part was watching BAMA whoop the stuffing out of Auburn.  So what did I eat? I at the candied yams of course. No I'm just kidding. I had the turkey , green bean casserole, some of that good Mexican Corn. All in all I would say that Nicki and I held our own this Thanksgiving.  I am very proud of her for losing as much as she has I think she is at around 37 pounds down.

What about me you ask?  Well I'm down another six which puts me over the 40 LB mark!

I just want to say a very big thank you to the folks at VIP Weight loss for all of their support. I really feel like I can handle the tempting foods around and not be swayed.   Let the parties begin!!

This time I am going to do something a little different. I am going to catch you up with me and where I currently am on my journey.  The reason I want to do this is so the holidays are all in current time.  We also have a trip to Nashville this week and I will be talking about the foods I am eating while I'm not at home.  I have some great tips on how to order healthy in a restaurant without killing your wallet that I will share with you and I might even through some video in of the BETA group competition and the Opryland Hotel.  So let's get to it.

Week 5 was a struggle again.  But what diet isn't? OK, I have to ask.  How many of you just thought "seefood diet"?  I lost another 2.2 lbs but really the struggle was the mental game.  The day before I was supposed to go weigh I weighed on my scale at home and I remember thinking sweet another 6 lbs down.  Then I go the next day and I had only lost 2. The big thing I am getting at hear is that I really wanted to go off the rails that weekend.  The game was on against Ole Miss (yes if you know me you know I'm a Bama fan) and I was sitting on the couch with kids eating chips and dips, grilled hamburgers and bratwursts.  I'm not hungry but when I get upset I eat so I wanted to cheat. But I didn't. Boring I know but I am determined to make it this time.

Week 6 wasn't better. I only lost 1.6 lbs.  The problem I was having was that my eating times were being pushed back to late in the evening like 9:30 or 10.  I would cook for the family and by the time they got home it was at least 9pm.  FYI, I was raised to wait for everyone to eat together.  I am still struggling with this and I have almost convinced myself to eat a snack early and maybe have a snack when they come home.  Small portions.


Week 7 was the breakthrough.  I lost 5.7 lbs! Now if you have been counting you know that at this point I have lost 23.5 lbs total.  Perseverance pays off.  I just had to keep doing what I was doing and the weight would keep dropping.

Week 8 was when I really started to get my act together and start walking on the treadmill regularly. I was walking a mile a day and not telling anyone that I was doing that. Not even my wife. I felt better and could see that my waist was smaller, I was down 2 sizes already and they were loose. Then I went in to weigh and I had gained 2 lbs. How could this be I was working out everyday and eating right, taking the meds . . . How?  Then the nurse looked at the graph at the bottom and said " You gained muscle and muscle is heavier than fat" Ugh. Still didn't make me feel better.

Week 9 Bama was playing TN and all week I was getting ribbed from all sides about the game. So I worked in the yard and walked on the treadmill and lost another 3 lbs which put me back on track. BTW Bama won big.

Week 10 I dropped another 6 lbs and and now at 31 lbs total lost.  I haven't done much different except that I try not to eat many carbs. I am eating meat and salads, mostly chicken, pork and fish but some beef.  I am not hungry at all, and I do not crave anything. The Topamax makes sweet things taste off, and carbonated beverages taste bad so I don't want them. 

Let me repeat that: I have lost 31 lbs in 10 weeks with VIP weight loss!! I know if I can do it with minimal effort, you can do it too. What are you waiting for? Just think you could lose 20-or 30 pounds by Christmas and look great for that New Years Eve party.
